Centauri II and Centauri SE deliver exceptional riding experiences, but each model targets different rider preferences and needs. Here's a breakdown of how they differ:
Transmission and Shifting:
The Centauri SE uses the Enviolo Trekking continuously variable transmission (CVT), which provides smooth, manual shifting with a wide range of gears. In contrast, the Centauri II features an automatic 3-speed rear hub transmission, which requires no input from the rider. It automatically shifts between gears as speed changes, making for a simple, hassle-free riding experience.
Riding Feel and Comfort:
The Centauri SE offers a smooth and stable ride with puncture-resistant 2.25” tires and a custom geometry, making it great for short urban trips and longer commutes. However, Centauri II takes comfort further with a 30mm suspension fork that softens bumps and potholes, providing an even smoother ride, especially on rougher roads.
Class and Speed:
Centauri SE is a "Class 3" ebike and provides pedal assist to 28mph.
Centauri II is a "Class 3" model and provides pedal assist to 28mph, along with push-button BOOST between 5-20mph.
Motor and Power:
Both models have a 350W Ananda mid-drive motor but target slightly different riding experiences. While the Centauri SE offers consistent, powerful climbing capability with its 120Nm torque, the Centauri II incorporates a "BOOST" button for an instant power surge, perfect for short bursts when crossing intersections or powering through steep hills. Experienced Centauri SE riders will be rewarded by shifting the Enviolo CVT hub to match their preferred cadence for smooth, silent motor performance. In contrast, Centauri II riders will take advantage of the massive torque on tap in any of their 3 hub gears.
Maintenance:
While both models are low-maintenance, the Centauri SE uses the Enviolo Trekking hub, designed for 10,000 miles without servicing. The Centauri II’s automatic hub is similarly low-maintenance but must be serviced with an oil change every 2,000-3,000 miles.
Weight and Handling:
Centauri II is slightly lighter (50 lbs vs. 52 lbs for the SE), mostly due to the added weight of the Enviolo transmission. It features improved geometry and three frame sizes for a more tailored fit. The Centauri SE focuses on providing a balanced, upright fit, with two size options.
Lighting:
Centauri II is oriented toward daily transportation riding with a frame-integrated main light and main-battery powered tail light. While brighter, the frame-integrated light does not track with the handlebars; it's primarily there to help other road users see the rider. Centauri SE uses the same main light element, mounted to the fork, which is nice for recreational riders often away from street lights, where the need to see around corners is paramount. Centauri SE includes a USB-rechargable and easily removable tail light.
Fenders:
Centauri II includes our alloy fender set for daily rides in any weather. Centauri SE is fully fender-compatible, but we forgo them to save weight (less weight is always nice!)
